Description of what behavior is expected of students
The students are to follow the Blogging Rules.
Only use your first name and last initial.
Never give out or use your email address, telephone number, home or school address (including town)
Only reply to someone you know within the school or your family.
Report to your teacher any unusual replies or comments that make you sad or confused
Use words that would be said in a classroom setting. Never be rude or mean.
Do not copy or alter another students’ work to make it your own.
Check your work for spelling.
Process or steps for teaching (i.e., what you will actually do in the classroom)
Brainstorm with the class about online risks
Watch Router’s Birthday Surprise , a 35 minute video about online risks created by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Discuss and answer any questions about the video. Clear up any ideas from the brainstorming activity.
Allow students that have a signed parental permission letter to create a blogging account on WordPress.
After teacher approval, the student may publish their blog.
Once their blog is published, the student will be taught how to reply to another classmate. Some examples will be given of appropriate ways to reply to a classmate.
The students will practice writing sample replies in their journals. The sample replies will be checked by the teacher.
The student will locate one of their classmates (from Mrs. Preston or Mrs. Short's class) blogs. They will read the blog and form a reply. The reply will be reviewed by the teacher before publishing.
What actions you will take and how you expect your students to respond if they find inappropriate content
I would expect my students to follow the Blogging Rules and report the situation immediately. I would refer back to the video and the rules while explaining to the class how the content was inappropriate. In addition, I would contact the sender and ask that they not contact the blog site again.
